I’m so excited to finally share my experience at Azura Skin Care Center and my very first time getting my face dermaplaned – woohoo!
So I’ve wanted to try dermaplaning for a while and after hearing from a few friends about how much they loved it, it only made me want it MORE. I’ve never been one to obsess over skincare (oops!) but I’ve gotten so much better as I’ve aged a bit – I’m older and wiser now, okay? 😉
I had pretty stereotypical skin as a teen; bumps, breakouts, redness and a lovely diagnosis of cystic acne – bleh! I wouldn’t say my skin was absolutely horrible but, I did spend a fair amount of time applying concealer and scouring the skincare aisle at Walmart for a miracle product. I have some lingering scarring and a bit of rosacea that I’ve since learned to handle as well as proper makeup application.
Speaking of makeup, that brings me to the reason I so badly wanted to try dermaplaning – it exfoliates and removes the top layer of skin leaving your face incredibly smooth, free of “peach fuzz” and creates a wonderful base for makeup application; no caking or clinging to fine little baby hairs.
I’m sure you’ve all heard the old wives tale claiming that if you shave an area of your body, the hair will then grow back thicker and black – not true. I’m no expert but I learned a ton from the expert at Azura Skin Care Center in Cary, Jennie Kowaleski, PA-C. She told me that nothing she does on the outside surface of the skin, changes anything on the inside. So take that, old wives!
When you walk into Azura, you will quickly notice that they designed the space to make you feel comfortable and relaxed. From the warm and cozy fireplace to the luxurious chairs, you immediately realize that you are in a beautifully thought out and well executed med spa. I also need to mention that there’s a unique and amazing chandelier in each and every room! So, so pretty. (You can find photos here!)
I had the pleasure of having Jennie do my treatment and she immediately made me realize that I was in good hands. She had me put on a *stunning* head wrap ( 😉 ), lie down and walked me through what to expect.
She told me that she would carefully be using a blade to gently scrape the outermost surface of my skin, basically giving me a really good shave. She cleansed my face and started going to town! Surprisingly, it was quite relaxing and Jennie gave me a lot of insight in regards to my particular skin type, skin care, use of sunscreen and explained various treatments I was curious about. I could tell she was taking her time and was expertly and precisely carrying out the treatment. Start to finish, it took about an hour and that included my 3,487 questions. When she was done, she moisturized my skin and encouraged me to feel it – what a change! It honestly was so incredibly smooth.
The true test (for me) was to see if it truly made a difference in my makeup application and indeed it did. I noticed that I didn’t have as much product build up above my upper lip or on my jaw line, which made everything look a bit more natural and less cakey.
In regards to how often you should get your face dermaplaned, I gathered the following from their website:
The normal skin growth cycle is around 30 days and since dermablading removes about 2-3 weeks-worth of dead skin cells, we recommend rescheduling about 4 weeks between treatments. Dermaplaning can also be performed prior to chemical peels to further prep the skin and enhance results.
So the final verdict – Did I enjoy my first dermaplaning? Yes! Did it meet my expectations? Yes! Will I do it again? Yes! Do I recommend it? Yes!
Have any of you had this particular treatment? Did you love/hate it? Any skincare treatments that you consider “must haves”? Let me know!
